The Red Wing Black Birds that we discovered in their return to the wetlands now pilgrimage to our home on a daily basis to visit our bird feeder, well-stocked with rich sunflower seeds. Our land is permeated by the lovely sound of their calls. And slowly I am becoming more familiar with their vocabulary. Although I do not pretend to know precisely what they are saying, I am beginning to notice correlations between their calls and their behaviors.
This blog focuses on a project of investigation and exploration focusing on the wetlands near our house in Sunshine Valley in the high desert of northern New Mexico. I will monitor and document these wetlands and my experiences of them through the seasons using both conventional and novel techniques and outcomes. I hope that you will join me as we walk through seasonal cycles in this place-based exploration of "wetlands in the desert."
Bioregional awareness teaches us in specific ways. It is not enough to just 'love nature' or to want to 'be in harmony with Gaia.' Our relation to the natural world takes place in a place, and it must be grounded in information and experience.
